Guatemala has a rich history and culture, with ancient Mayan civilization being one of the most advanced and developed of the pre-Columbian Americas. The Spanish conquest of the region in the 16th century brought significant changes, including the introduction of Christianity and the use of the Spanish language.
Guatemala is known for its diverse culture, which has been shaped by its indigenous heritage, Spanish colonial past, and more recent mestizo and ladino influences. The country is home to many traditional festivals and ceremonies, such as the Day of the Dead and the Day of the Candelaria, which blend indigenous and Christian traditions.
The economy of Guatemala is primarily based on agriculture, with coffee, sugar, and bananas being among the main exports. The country also has a growing manufacturing sector and is a popular destination for tourists seeking to experience its natural beauty and ancient Mayan ruins.
The population of Guatemala is over 17 million people, with the majority of people being of mestizo (mixed European and indigenous) descent. There are also significant communities of indigenous Maya, as well as Afro-Guatemalans and people of European descent. Alongside Spanish, there are 21 Mayan languages spoken in the country, which include K’iche’, Q’anjob’al, and Kaqchikel.
