Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani and the country has a population of approximately 10 million people. The capital and largest city is Baku.
Azerbaijan has a long and rich history, with influences from various cultures and empires, including the Persians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Mongols, the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The country has many historical and cultural sites, such as the Old City of Baku, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The country has a presidential representative democratic republic system of government. The President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government. The country has a unicameral parliament, known as the National Assembly.
Azerbaijan’s economy is heavily dependent on oil and natural gas production, which accounts for a large share of the country’s GDP and exports. The country also has a rapidly growing non-oil sector, which includes agriculture, transportation, and services. The country has a diversifying economy, by investing in different sectors like tourism, agriculture, technology, and education.
Azerbaijan has ongoing disputes with neighboring Armenia, including the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which started in the late 1980s and escalated into a full-scale war in the early 1990s. A ceasefire was signed in 1994, but no final peace agreement has been reached and the region remains a source of tension.
